Bogus gas man punches homeowner
Bogus caller, generic
Police urged residents to be wary of unknown visitors on their doorsteps
A bogus caller dressed as a gas man and carrying fake ID has assaulted and robbed a woman in her Edinburgh home.

The 25-year-old victim answered the door to the man, who claimed to work for a gas company.

He was wearing a dark jacket with the words 'GAS' printed on the left breast, and was carrying an A5 size electronic computer pad with a digital display.

The incident happened at about 0900 GMT on Monday, in Craigour Drive, in the Moredun area of the city.

The victim opened the door to let the man in but he pushed on the door, making her fall backwards.

Demanded cash

He then demanded cash, and punched the woman in the face before leaving with a small amount of money.

The man was described as being white, 6ft, of heavy build with a fat face and a tanned complexion.

A police spokeswoman said: "This man was wearing a particularly convincing disguise when he gained access to the woman's home, and we are concerned he could strike again elsewhere.

"Anyone who has any information that could help us identify the suspect should contact police.

"We would urge people to stay vigilant, and if they have any doubts over the identity of the caller, to refuse them entry and immediately call the police."
