Council 'to keep libraries open'
Library books
The decision to close the libraries had been unpopular with locals
Four libraries in Fife could be saved from closure after the new SNP-Lib Dem administration pledged a review.

The previous Labour-run council had decided to cut 250,000 from its budget for the voluntary sector and a further 46,000 from libraries and museums.

The decision meant libraries in Colinsburgh, East Wemyss, Pitteuchar, Thornton and the McDouall Stuart museum in Dysar were earmarked for closure.

The council will now attempt to make the savings elsewhere.

Council leader Peter Grant said the bid to save them was in keeping with a pre-election pledge to reverse the decision to close the libraries and museum.

He added: "We made a commitment that we would reinstate the cuts in funding to the voluntary sector and libraries and museums.

"The Policy, Finance and Asset Management Committee will look again at these budget decisions on 2 August."

'Essential services'

Depute leader Elizabeth Riches said the administration would be recommending the cut services be reinstated.

She added: "I'm very pleased we're able to review these budget cuts. Keeping local services is important and we want to do this wherever possible.

"Voluntary organisations provide essential services for people in Fife. They're of great value not only to those who receive them but also their families and ourselves.

"Libraries and museums hold a similar place in the heart of our communities. They can be a focal point for a whole range of activities and give a sense of identity and belonging."

The McDouall Stuart museum is based in the house where John McDouall Stuart, the first explorer to cross Australia, was born in 1815. The small museum describes his harrowing journeys and the Australian wilderness.
