Snow hits train and road travel

Drivers have experienced major difficulties due to the snow

Thousands of commuters in Scotland have experienced major disruption to their journeys due to heavy snow.

Police in Dumfries and Galloway said traffic was at a standstill on the M74 northbound at Junction 16.

They are advising drivers not to take to the major motorway in and out of Scotland unless absolutely necessary.

At teatime on Tuesday, passengers using Glasgow's Central Station experienced lengthy waits when trains broke down and signals failed.

Network Rail said the worst of the disruption on the rail system was over by 1900 GMT.

Other areas of Scotland have also been affected by the adverse weather. Grampian Police said there were major problems on the roads in Aberdeenshire.

Just before 1700 GMT on Tuesday, the concourse at central station had to be temporarily closed due to the numbers of passengers waiting for trains.

Craig Bowman, from Network Rail, said thousands of passengers had been affected.

A train had broken down on the Ayrshire and Largs route and there had been points failures at various locations.

Mr Bowman added there had also been problems getting staff to the affected areas to repair the problems due to congestion on the roads.

Train operator ScotRail said at 1915 GMT services between Glasgow and Paisley were still subject to delays and cancellation due to a points failure.

Elsewhere, Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary said traffic was at a standstill on parts of the M74 due to snow and a jack-knifed lorry.

Grampian Police urged the public to avoid non-essential travel.

A spokesman added that the snowy conditions were likely to persist over the next 48 hours.
