Scottish singer Lulu said she was "over the moon" at being awarded an OBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List.

But she said her one regret was that her parents were not around to witness the handing over of the prestigious accolade.

The 51-year-old spoke on Friday about how proud her mother and father would have been.

Lulu - real name Marie Macdonald Maclaughlan Lawrie - has been a familiar face since scoring her first chart hit with Shout when she was just 15 in 1964.

She soon made her name on television and recently fronted BBC1's Red Alert lottery show.

Lulu said: "I'm thrilled. But the immediate thing that came to my mind was how I lost my two parents in the last three years and how thrilled and proud they would be.

"I see them smiling down and it makes the whole thing really poignant."

The singer is holding back from the celebrations as she rehearses for her appearance at the T In The Park event in Kinross.

"It's really quite a big thing for me," she said. "So I will probably save the celebration for the day I actually receive the OBE."

In the 36 years since she made her chart debut, Lulu has had 16 top 40 hits including a collaboration with Take That on Relight My Fire, her only number one.

She topped the US charts with To Sir With Love at the age of 18 and jointly won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1969 with Boom-Bang-A-Bang.

TV comeback

Glasgow-born Lulu teamed up with David Bowie who wrote The Man Who Sold The World for her and was given the honour of performing the Bond theme for The Man With The Golden Gun.

She said of her work on Red Alert: "Coming back on television after all those years of not doing it I realised how much I enjoyed it and so many people have told me the same thing.

"I'm having talks about another TV series so it's actually all pretty hectic. I don't really want to say anything about it except to say that it will be on television and I'll probably be doing several things.

Referring to the accolade she joked: "This really is an honour but one's life will not change."
