Mr Fergusson said he expected complaints in writing. |
Holyrood's presiding officer has moved to clamp down on continuing claims from opposition parties that ministers have been misleading parliament. Alex Fergusson said the use of "points of order" in the debating chamber related to the rule requiring MSPs to conduct themselves properly.
Labour has used the system several times to challenge the accuracy of comments made by SNP ministers.
But Mr Fergusson said that was a matter for the first minister.
Following question time last Thursday, Scottish Labour issued a press release stating that First Minister Alex Salmond had been reported to the presiding officer for "lying in parliament".
Inadvertent errors
In a statement issued by Scottish Parliament bosses, Mr Fergusson said he now expected issues concerning conduct in the chamber to be put to him in writing and issues under the Scottish ministerial code to be drawn to the attention of the first minister.
"Members are themselves responsible for what they say during proceedings," he said.
"I am not responsible for establishing the veracity of what is said during those proceedings as this is not covered by either standing orders or the MSP code of conduct."
Mr Fergusson also pointed out the requirement for ministers to correct any inadvertent errors they make to parliament at the earliest opportunity.
The presiding officer has already written to MSPs, asking them to buck up their ideas in the debating chamber, by issuing guidance requiring members to stop addressing each other on first name terms and talking among themselves.
