Sheridan hails airgun ban survey

Tommy Sheridan is calling for airguns to be banned
More than eight in 10 people in Scotland would back a ban on airguns, according to a poll carried out on behalf of Glasgow MSP Tommy Sheridan.

The founder of socialist party Solidarity has lodged a bill in the Scottish Parliament calling for the weapons to be made illegal.

He said that 82% of the 1,000 respondents said they supported his proposal to restrict use.

Support was highest amongst 18 to 24-year-olds and over-65s.

Mr Sheridan said the mother of Andrew Morton, the toddler who died after being shot in Glasgow in 2005, has added her support to the bill.

However James Scott, Scottish development officer for the British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC), said that the organisation was not convinced that the ban would work.

"Our position is that there already is a plethora of legislation on the control and use of airguns and more won't do much good," he added.

"What we need is education and enforcement of the existing legislation."
