B&B compulsory registration plea
Fawlty Towers
"Cowboy" establishments are tarnishing the tourism industry
A leading business group has called for a compulsory registration scheme for hotels and bed and breakfast providers.

The Federation of Small Businesses in Scotland said the move would help isolate "cowboy" establishments.

The organisation claims that reputable owners make stringent efforts to meet health and hygiene regulations only to be undercut by rogue operators.

The proposal is part of a paper setting out the federation's views on how to develop Scotland's tourist industry.

The policy document says: "Our members are concerned about the actions of some individuals who hang a B&B sign outside their home during the tourist season.

"Not only does this unfairly steal their custom, it also offers the visitor a lower standard of service, which reflects badly on Scotland."

The document also calls for changes to make regulation in the industry clearer, simpler and more effective.
