McConnell meets Queen for talks
The Queen and Jack McConnell
The meeting took place during a week of royal engagements
The Queen has met the first minister at the start of a week of royal engagements in Scotland.

Jack McConnell spent half an hour with the Queen in the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh on Tuesday.

A spokesman for Mr McConnell declined to reveal what was discussed during the private meeting.

The Queen also granted audiences to Arnold Ruutel, president of Estonia, and Lithuanian president Valdas Adamkus at her official Edinburgh residence.

Hundreds of guests will attend the annual Garden Party in the grounds of the palace at the foot of the Royal Mile on Wednesday.

On Thursday, the Queen will open The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards' Regimental Museum at Edinburgh Castle.

She will conclude her engagements on Friday by opening the Queen Mother Memorial Garden at the Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh.
