 Everyone seeking an NHS dentist should have one by July |
Every patient waiting for an NHS dentist in Dumfries and Galloway should have been allocated one by late July. Medical director Angus Cameron told the region's health board that significant progress had been made in tackling the problems facing the area.
At present there are more than 13,000 people on the waiting list for registration with an NHS dentist.
The board is confident it can find them places and then encourage other people to join the NHS treatment list.
A number of initiatives have started to tackle the situation which saw thousands of people left without cover as dentists de-registered.
Dumfries and Galloway NHS Board will shortly be employing five Polish dentists, with the first set to start in Castle Douglas in April.
A Dumfries Dental Centre development is also seeking to be up and running by December 2007.
"The board should be reassured that we are implementing dental development plans within the budgets agreed and within the timescales previously indicated," said Dr Cameron in his report.
"The current waiting list of patients seeking registration with an NHS dentist contains in excess of 13,000 names.
"All patients currently on the list should be allocated an NHS dentist by the end of July."
