Arcade switches to dental surgery
The Loreburne Centre
The new surgery would be housed inside the shopping centre
A bid is being made for a 10,000 patient dental surgery in Dumfries - on the site of an old amusement arcade.

Councillors are being advised to approve the proposals to convert a unit in the Loreburne Centre.

At present more than 60% of patients in Dumfries and Galloway are not registered with an NHS dentist.

The plans, submitted by Integrated Dental Holdings Ltd, are backed by the local NHS medical director as helping to tackle the region's dental problems.

The council has received one objection to the scheme on the grounds of the loss of the retail unit.

However, planning officials are recommending the approval of the plan subject to a number of conditions.

'Well placed'

NHS medical director Angus Cameron has written in support of the application for planning permission.

He said: "The proposed location in the Loreburn Centre is well placed to serve the community and is accessed by various forms of public transport.

"The location also has level access and would allow disabled patients to have dental treatment at ground-floor level."

If successful, the proposal would create a practice with four surgeries on two floors of the shopping centre unit.
