Henrik Larsson was recognised for his contribution to sport |
Former Celtic star Henrik Larsson has received an honorary degree from Glasgow's Strathclyde University. The 33-year-old Swedish international was made a Doctor of the University in a ceremony on Wednesday morning.
The award was given in recognition of his contribution to sport and his impact on Glasgow and Scotland.
University principal Professor Andrew Hamnett said: "His contribution to Scottish football has been monumental and he is a superb role model."
He added: "We are delighted that Henrik Larsson has accepted the honorary degree.
"Mr Larsson's tremendous contribution to sport is well-known. However, the university believes that his impact on Glasgow and Scotland as a whole went far beyond the football field.
Talismanic figure
"His charity work and general demeanour mark him as an ideal role model for our students."
The Swede received his award, along with our other honorary graduates, at a ceremony in the Barony Hall.
Larsson, who joined Barcelona from Celtic in 2004, suffered a cruciate ligament knee injury in November, but then signed a new two-year deal.
The striker was a talismanic figure for the Parkhead club during his seven-year stay in Glasgow.
He was voted player of the year, set new goalscoring records and won the European Golden Boot award.
