Cash deal to lure rural teachers
Rural school
The plan aims to boost rural schools
Teachers are to be offered thousands of pounds extra to work in parts of Scotland which struggle to recruit staff, it has emerged.

Schools in rural areas are expected to benefit most from the bonus scheme for newly qualified staff set up by the Scottish Executive.

There are currently more than 600 unfilled vacancies across the country.

The deal will be worth 6,000 to graduates if they are flexible about where they go in their first year.

Quieter areas like the Highlands and Dumfries and Galloway often have the most problems attracting staff.

The deal is based on a smaller scale existing scheme.

It is hoped that some will stay on in their schools after their probationary year, helping address the problem in the longer term.

Last month the Scottish Secondary Teachers' Association warned that steps need to be taken to avoid a teacher shortage crisis.
