First teachers win 'super' status

Chartered staus enables teachers to stay in the classroom without losing pay
A group of 37 teachers from Scotland has become the first in the country to be elevated to "chartered" status.

The move is part of the McCrone package of radical changes to salary and conditions for teaching staff.

Chartered status brings a 6,500 pay increase and more than 6,000 staff have shown an interest so far.

The aim is to provide more income for good teachers who wish to carry on teaching rather than being promoted to posts with less classroom involvement.

Welcoming the first teachers to go through the selection process, Education Minister Peter Peacock said: "We must create a modern education system which has a valued teaching profession as its heart.

To be the best

"Chartered teaching status allows teachers to be the best they can be and with great teachers we can achieve great things."

He saw the move as another achievement for Scotland's devolved government - helping to raise standards in schools and ensuring a motivated, better rewarded and enthusiastic profession.

Continued investment would allow the government to drive forward a comprehensive package of school reforms.
