An Aberdeen schoolgirl has died from a meningococcal infection, it has emerged.

Shomi Miah, who attended Harlaw Academy in the city, was rushed to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary after showing symptoms of the condition, but later died.

NHS Grampian have identified those who had been in close contact with the 17-year-old and given antibiotics to those thought to be at risk.

The teenager had been suffering from a meningococcal group B infection.

Staff and pupils at the school were said to be "shocked and saddened" by the youngster's death.

A spokesman for Aberdeen City Council said: "We can confirm a senior pupil at Harlaw Academy sadly died after being admitted to hospital in Aberdeen yesterday.

"Staff and pupils at the school were shocked and saddened at the pupil's sudden death and thoughts are with her family."

He added: "We're liaising closely with NHS Grampian's health protection team and letters have gone out to senior pupils giving them advice and information about the symptoms."

Shoma's brother, Kajal Jabir Miah, said: "The whole family is absolutely devastated, 24 hours ago she was perfectly normal."
