Manager stabbed at private jail
Kilmarnock Prison
Kilmarnock is Scotland's only private prison
A senior manager at Kilmarnock Prison was taken to hospital after being stabbed in the stomach.

Michael Guy, 34, an assistant director at the privately-run jail, was injured in an incident on Monday afternoon.

He was taken to Crosshouse Hospital in Kilmarnock and detained overnight for observation before being released on Tuesday. He did not require surgery.

Strathclyde Police said that a 34-year-old prisoner has been reported to the procurator fiscal.

The incident took place in the prison's B Hall on Monday afternoon.

The jail, which was opened in March 1999, holds 500 men on medium-term sentences.

Voiced concerns

A spokesman for Premier Prisons, which runs the jail, said an internal investigation would be carried out.

"A member of staff was jabbed yesterday and taken to hospital," said a spokesman.

"He has now been released and the matter is in the hands of the police."

The Prison Officers' Association has frequently voiced concerns about staffing levels and the safety of those working at the prison.

Derek Turner, the union's assistant general secretary, said an independent inquiry should be held into the prison to ensure that Premier Prisons was fulfilling its contract.
