Trouble at private prison
Kilmarnock Prison
Kilmarnock Prison is operated by a private company
A stand-off between prisoners and staff at Scotland's privately-run jail ended early on Thursday morning.

About 25 inmates were returned to their cells at Kilmarnock Prison at 0630 GMT.

Prisoners in two of the jail's wings refused to return to their cells at about 2200 GMT on Wednesday.

One wing returned to their cells overnight following negotiations with prison officers.

The remaining inmates were returned to their cells by officers who went into the block.

A prison service spokesman said: "The inmates were put back in their cells by officers at around 6.30am."

He would not comment on whether or not force had been used but said inmates "did not go back of their own accord".

Inmates set fire to a pool table but the blaze was extinguished by military firefighters called to the scene in a Green Goddess.

The cell blocks are not thought to have been seriously damaged in the disturbance.
