Police said the problem was not just seasonal |
Too many motorists are still driving while under the influence of alcohol, police have warned. Officers in Lothian and Borders said that during August and September three people a day were caught breaking drink-drive laws.
Superintendent Colin McNeill, head of the force's traffic department, said the trend showed that the issue was a year-round problem.
Supt McNeill described the statistics as "startling".
He said: "What we're seeing now across the country is that there is evidence that it is on the increase.
"What we want to do now is, nationally and locally, try and remind people that drink-driving is a serious offence, it does pose a risk to not only the offenders themselves but the motoring public and others using the road."
Driving bans totalling 350 years have been handed out in the force area during the last two months.
Recent incidents included someone supervising a learner driver failing a roadside breath test and a scooter rider with a blood alcohol content four times the legal limit who fell off his moped.
