There was a 60% rise on drink driving compared with last year. |
A police chief has called drink drivers "pathetic individuals" who will eventually be caught and punished. The harsh words came from Northern Constabulary superintendent, John Darcy.
He was speaking after it was revealed that drink-drive figures in the force area are 60% up on those of last year.
In 2002, 20 people were charged with the offence after the third week of the festive anti-drink-drive campaign, compared with 32 this year.
The force highlighted one case where a driver was found to be four times over the limit.
Mr Darcy, head of operational support at Northern Constabulary, delivered his scathing attack on drink-drivers after he was told of the latest figures.
He said: "Those pathetic individuals who drink and drive will eventually be caught.
"I want to thank and commend the public of the Highlands and Islands who continue to help us deal with this menace. "I must also mention the exemplary work of our officers throughout the force area in tackling this blight on our community."
He added: "We are determined to succeed in once again making drink-driving completely unacceptable in our society.
"Again I would say to those who may think it's clever or cool to drink and drive, think again, you are pathetic and will be caught."
Police have asked anyone who suspects a person of drinking and driving to report them.
Northern Constabulary said members of the community have become so concerned at the heartache caused by the consequences of drinking and driving that they have been reporting members of their own family committing the offence to the police.
