Drink campaign nets school driver
Drink drive
Police say the latest figures have been "disappointing"
A school bus driver on his way to work has been caught drink driving during the festive road safety campaign by police in Scotland.

The driver was on his way to work when he was stopped by police in Tayside on 19 December.

Nationally, the number of motorists detected has fallen from 405 to 396 in the first two weeks of the month-long campaign.

But more women have been caught drink driving so far this festive period.

Seventy-three women tested positive in the past fortnight, compared to 46 last year.

The number of motorists driving under the influence of drugs dropped, with 15 people charged during the last two weeks compared to 19 last year.

We would have liked to have seen more of a fall given all the publicity and awareness that drink driving is given at this time of year

The Association of the Chief Police Officers in Scotland (Acpos) said it was disappointed that the decrease in drink driving had not been more marked.

Ian Dickinson, vice-chairman of Acpos' Road Policing Committee, said: "Whilst it is encouraging that the number fallen, albeit slightly, we would have liked to have seen more of a fall given all the publicity and awareness that drink driving is given at this time of year.

"Last week it was highlighted that the number of women motorists caught drink driving had increased during the first week.

"The figures from the second week have also shown a similar large increase which is worrying."

He said the public could call Crimestoppers to report habitual drink drivers, free and in confidence, on 0800 555 111.

In one incident, a motorist in Ayr telephoned police to say he had crashed into a roundabout and then waved down a passing patrol car so that he could be arrested.
