Fine mess over dog poo crackdown
Dog
Dog owners are being urged to clean up after their pets
Councils are being inconsistent in the way they sweep up the problem of dog fouling in their areas, figures show.

In April, councils were given powers to hand out on-the-spot fines to dog owners who do not scoop up waste.

Scottish Borders Council has yet to issue any notices against dog owners and said it would not take on wardens until next year's budget is finalised.

Some 113 dog owners have been fined in Edinburgh, while Glasgow City Council has penalised 100 people.

Dundee has two animal control officers and the council has fined 77 people since April.

Hertsmere Council in England has reacted to the problem by spray painting dog poo pink to encourage responsible pet ownership.

A special machine is used to remove the mess after it is sprayed with the biodegradable paint.
