The protest happened at Dungavel detention centre |
An immigration centre in Lanarkshire is getting back to normal after three asylum seekers staged a rooftop protest, the Home Office said. The demonstration at Dungavel in Lanarkshire on Monday lasted about three hours.
It is understood the protesters were Algerian refugees but no further details were available.
Strathclyde Police said on Tuesday that there had been no reports of any further incidents overnight.
The Home Office said the incident was reported at 1120 GMT and the first member of the group came down at midday.
The remaining two ended their demonstration shortly after 1400 GMT.
The spokesman said: "Immigration officers had a chat with them and found out what they wanted. After negotiations, they came down.
"We were concerned for their safety and will listen to the issues they raised."
Mental torture
The campaign group Positive Action Against Housing later claimed three men were involved in the demonstration.
PAH director Robina Qureshi said it illustrated the anger of the detainees.
She said: "This government has systematically driven asylum seekers to desperation and stage the rooftop protest because of its policy of indefinite incarceration without crime or time limit.
"Asylum seekers came to the UK to escape persecution and claim their liberty and instead have been locked up for no crime whatsoever.
"It is a travesty of human rights."
Glasgow-based human rights lawyer Aamer Anwar claimed refugees being detained in the controversial centre were "suffering mental and physical torture".
He said: "This government has pushed desperate people to extremes and it is only a matter of time before someone dies as a result of the regime at Dungavel."
