Bid to attract builders of tomorrow

Construction workers are in short supply
A multi-million pound scheme aimed at encouraging people to enter the building trade has been launched in Glasgow.

It is hoped Construction Glasgow will address the long-term recruitment needs of the industry.

Plans to regenerate Glasgow have led to a growth in the construction industry and a number of high profile projects mean the boom is expected to continue.

By 2008 the industry is expected to have expanded by more than 60%, creating an estimated shortfall of more than 6,500 workers.

Scottish Enterprise has pledged 25m to Construction Glasgow over the next five years, with backing from Glasgow City Council, building unions and local colleges.

The demand has been generated by ongoing investment in the city's international financial services district, city science project, Glasgow harbour development and the council's plans for primary education.

Ron Culley, chief executive of Scottish Enterprise Glasgow, said: "Construction Glasgow will have a positive impact on the city's growing economy by creating long term sustainable employment and encouraging business start ups, business growth and training and upskilling."
