Cameron got 57% of the vote |
Big Brother winner Cameron Stout has returned home to Orkney for the first time since he shot to fame in the channel 4 reality show. Despite being considered one of the outsiders at the start of the series, the 32-year-old Christian and self-confessed virgin won the contest with 57% of the final vote.
Since the final show on 25 July, Cameron has been in London and America fulfilling duties of his contract.
But on Saturday, Cameron finally reached his homeland and was greeted by hundreds of locals as he arrived in his home town of Stromness by ferry.
Family members, friends and local civic leaders arranged a day of celebrations in his honour.
Orkney council convener Stephen Hagan praised Cameron for putting Orkney and its 20,000 inhabitants firmly on the map.
He said the Orkney Islands Tourist Board's website received 23,000 visits in June.
"Cameron won the hearts of the entire country and he was a tremendous ambassador for the islands," said Mr Hagan.
"He has put this place on the map for many people who perhaps had never heard of Orkney and Stromness, despite the fact it is such a beautiful place."
Mr Hagan said Cameron would face a Big Brother-style inquisition before local people as part of the open-air celebrations which would include dancing into the evening with a traditional Scottish ceilidh.
'Level-headed'
Friends of the fish trader have always insisted he would turn his back on the media spotlight and return to Stromness fish market.
Schoolfriend Graham Garson, 31, said: "Because of the type of person Cameron is, I don't think he will embark on a media career.
"After the first few weeks I wasn't so sure but throughout his time in the house he has managed to remain the same level-headed person he has always been and I think that's what has got him through it in the end.
"After a few weeks, when all the wall-to-wall publicity has died down, I think he'll come back here and sell fish." Cameron frequently read the Bible to his fellow housemates and voiced his disapproval of the other contestants' heavy drinking, but came out of his shell during a one-week exchange trip to the South African Big Brother house.
On his future plans, he said he wanted to catch up with his family and friends in Orkney, adding it would be "cool" to become the next producer of Songs of Praise.
On Friday Cameron was spotted checking out pianos in a music shop in Aberdeen after promising to spend some of his winnings to donate a new one to Kirkwall Baptist church.
