Sex shop plan rejected

Glasgow council's licensing board has turned down an application for the city's first licensed sex shop.

Darker Enterprises, which owns 85 sex shops in England and Wales, had wanted to open its first Scottish outlet near Central Station.

However, the city council committee which considered the application insisted a sex shop was not wanted in Glasgow.

About 450 objections to the proposal were received, many on the grounds of the shop' s proximity to Central Station.

The company said it wanted to open its first Scottish outlet in Glasgow rather than Edinburgh, where there are already established sex shops operating.

Darker Enterprises said Glasgow boasts many of its mail-order customers.

The city council has a policy of not granting sex-shop licences.

Opponents included Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, which carried out a survey of its members who warned that the shop would harm business.

Darker Enterprises said that in the event of refusal it would be prepared to take its case to the European courts if necessary.
