The couple have been together for two years |
Scottish National Party leader John Swinney has married BBC journalist Elizabeth Quigley in a ceremony in Edinburgh. Mr Swinney had faced a challenge to his leadership by party activist Bill Wilson the day before his wedding but he brushed aside all political issues to take his vows in front of 80 family and friends.
The North Tayside MSP wore tartan trousers for the ceremony which was held at St Peter's Church in Morningside on Saturday.
Ms Quigley arrived in a silver Mercedes limousine wearing a white strapless wedding dress, with silver tiara and matching necklace.
The church service and marriage were conducted by Father Francis Kerr, parish priest at St Peter's, where Elizabeth is a parishioner.
The address to the couple was given by Rev Robert Watt, formerly Church of Scotland minister at Cargill-Burrelton Church in Perthshire where John is a parishioner.
Mr Swinney, 39, a divorced father-of-two, and Ms Quigley have been dating for two years.
'Lovely service'
After emerging from the church Mr Swinney said the ceremony had been "absolutely fantastic" while his new wife said it had been "wonderful... lovely".
The pair posed for photographers before leaving for the reception.
Mr Swinney said: "It was a lovely service. It was one that Elizabeth and I thought a great deal about.
"We had planned every part of it and it was just the way we wanted it. Most importantly, she said `I do', which I was really very pleased about."
