Two events over the weekend - Mardi Gras in the Grassmarket and Jazz on a Summer's Day in Princes Street Gardens - are free to the public. The festival is the longest running jazz festival in the UK and marks the start of wider festival celebrations running throughout the month of August.
What many people refer to as "the festival" is actually eight different festivals, starting with jazz and ending with the Edinburgh Mela.
In between, there is the book festival, which this year features Sex and the City author Candice Bushnell, and the film festival.
There is also a children's festival, a science festival and the world renowned International festival, as well as the Fringe.
