Peter Carmichael still gets flashbacks to the shooting |
A bus driver who was shot in the head with an air rifle has said he is afraid to return to work. Peter Carmichael, 32, has a pellet lodged in his skull after being hit by a rifle fired from bushes as his bus pulled away from a stop in Erskine, Renfrewshire.
It was the latest in a series of assaults on bus drivers. No-one has been arrested for the shooting.
Mr Carmichael told BBC Scotland that he was still haunted by memories of the incident, which took place three weeks ago.
He was shot in the back of the head through an open window as he stopped to let passengers off a number 23, single-decker, Arriva bus on Park Drive, in the town.
"That night, I could have been killed", he said.
"It is scary. It scares me now. I'm okay during the day but at night-time, that is when I start getting flashbacks and feeling nervous and I don't really want to go out at night."
The mark left on his skull by the pellet entry wound |
Mr Carmichael said that hitting buses with bricks or pellets had become "a game" for youngsters. He hopes that they can see the damage caused by their target practice.
It is possible that Mr Carmichael will need more surgery on the pellet, which is lodged in his skull.
He said that the mental trauma had made it impossible for him to return to work.
"I actually made a trip down to my work to speak to somebody and as soon as I went into my depot I felt physically sick."
