Bus driver hit by pellet
Lothian bus
A bus driver has been shot in the face with an air gun after being confronted by a gang at a terminus in west Edinburgh.

Police said up to 20 youths approached the 42-year-old man's vehicle in the Wester Hailes area and tried to open its engine compartment and doors.

The driver was struck in the face by a pellet fired from the gun as he made an emergency radio call.

He was taken to the city's Royal Infirmary with a swollen temple and later released.

A spokesman for Lothian and Borders Police said the driver could have sustained a very serious injury and he appealed for witnesses to the incident on Monday evening.

He said: "The driver was extremely fortunate that he did not suffer more serious injury as the pellet narrowly missed his eye.

"At the time of the incident there were several passengers on the bus who have not contacted police and we would urge them to come forward."

Police said they do not have a description of the youths who attacked the 32A Lothian bus.
