Police light
Police have issued a warning following the incident
A 15-year-old boy has drowned in the River Liddel near Harelaw, Dumfriesshire.

As temperatures soared on Tuesday, a group of local children went into a pool in the river to swim.

Christopher Castle, from Harelaw, Canonbie, is said to have got into difficulties in the water and drowned before emergency personnel reached the scene.

His body was later recovered from the river near Penton Bridge.

The boy's family have been informed and a post-mortem examination would be carried out, police said.

A spokesman for Dumfries and Galloway Police said: "We would warn people against swimming in open water. No matter how strong a swimmer they may be there are hidden dangers."

River rescue

In a separate incident in the Borders, three children had to be rescued by passers-by after going for a swim in a river.

The youngsters, all believed to be about nine years old, were pulled from the River Tweed at Peebles.

The children are said to have gotten into difficulties whilst swimming and paddling.

They were pulled to the bank suffering from shock and hypothermia, but conscious and were taken to a local medical centre for checks.

One adult rescuer also needed attention. Two others declined treatment.
