| Wednesday, 5 February, 2003, 10:36 GMT Weather eases but schools stay shut ![]() Most pupils have returned to school More than 50 schools remain closed as bad weather continues to bite in parts of Scotland. In the Highlands, about 30 schools were closed due to the wintry conditions. And in Aberdeenshire, around 28 schools were closed or partially closed. About 10 minor roads in both regions were also shut as a result of driving snow and ice. A Grampian Police spokesman confirmed the situation appeared slightly calmer than on Tuesday when two people were killed in separate road accidents as blizzards caused havoc. Hundreds of schools were closed in the north and north-east on Tuesday, allowing tens of thousands of children to miss classes for the second day running. The icy weather also left thousands of people without power. | See also: 04 Feb 03 | Scotland 31 Jan 03 | Scotland 31 Jan 03 | UK 31 Jan 03 | UK 30 Jan 03 | Scotland Top Scotland stories now: Links to more Scotland stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
