Coldplay have been unveiled as the headline act as T in the Park celebrates its 10th anniversary this summer.

The highly-rated UK band will close Scotland's biggest music festival, which runs from 12 to 13 July at Balado, near Kinross, in Perthshire.

They have been added to the bill alongside legendary US rockers REM who were confirmed as headliners at the end of last year.

More than 100,000 fans are expected to take part in the event.

REM last played Scotland in 1999

Coldplay, whose albums Parachutes and A Rush of Blood to the Head have both won critical acclaim, sold out Glasgow's SECC within hours before performing there last year.

It will be the first Scottish show for REM since 1999, when they performed three sell-out gigs at Stirling Castle.

Coldplay bass player, Guy Berryman, who was born in Kirkcaldy, Fife, said: "We've always loved playing in Scotland and, being Scottish myself, it's extra special for me.

"To headline the festival's 10th birthday is a great honour and something we're really looking forward too."

Geoff Ellis, of concert organisers Big Day Out, added: "We are proud to be able to announce that Coldplay have been confirmed as Sunday's headliners.

"Since first playing the King Tut's Tent in 2000, in just two years they have become not only one of the biggest bands in the UK, but internationally as well.

"We are very much looking forward to them closing our 10th birthday celebrations on the Sunday night."

He added: "We have always said that our 10th birthday celebrations were going to be something extra special.

"T in the Park has always been about the people who attend as well as the bands, and this year we want to give the Balado crowd a line-up and atmosphere to rival any festival in the world."
