| Wednesday, 29 January, 2003, 08:36 GMT Regeneration body comes under fire ![]() The group is working for a better city The government quango responsible for Glasgow's regeneration has been criticised in a new report. The Glasgow Alliance was accused of failing to achieve its main objectives and not giving value for money. But its supporters said it had been damaged by a lack of support from Glasgow City Council.
An independent consultant's report claimed that the organisation has underperformed and lost its way. The report said the Alliance lacked impact, lacked leadership and had structural weaknesses. The Labour MP for Glasgow Pollok, Ian Davidson, said it should be folded. "It has failed completely to speak for Glasgow," he said. "I think it has not been democratically accountable in reflecting the needs and desires of the people of Glasgow. It has had its own agenda. Solid foundations "And I think it just has not been value for money. There are staff there, there is money getting lavished on offices and the like, and what has it done?" However, the supporters of the Alliance claimed that the report was one-sided. They said it had built solid foundations and had great potential for the future.
"It would have been relevant for that evaluation to have looked at the Glasgow Alliance's performance alongside the performance of other partnerships in other parts of the west of Scotland and beyond who are charged with similar responsibilities. "I think they would have found broadly similar issues arising there." He said that the partnership had to be a long-term venture. Council leader Scottish Enterprise Glasgow's chief executive Ron Culley added: "The niggles of a report compiled by consultants cannot be allowed to stand in the way of the future prosperity of Glasgow." The report also criticised Glasgow council leader Charlie Gordon. It suggested he had consistently undermined the working of the Alliance. Mr Gordon refused to comment to BBC Scotland about the report's claims. |
