Former Bay City Rollers manager Tam Paton has been released on bail after being arrested in connection with claims of sexual abuse of young boys.

But he was immediately re-arrested in connection with alleged drugs offences.

He was first held by Lothian and Borders Police at his home in the Gogarburn area of Edinburgh on Wednesday night.

TV presenter Matthew Kelly was also arrested by police in connection with the same operation and then bailed.

The inquiry, which is being led by Surrey Police, is based on allegations dating back 30 years.

A spokeswoman for the Surrey force said Paton had been released on bail until 12 March, but had immediately been re-arrested by Lothian and Borders officers in connection with alleged drugs offences, and was due to appear in court in Edinburgh.

A Lothian and Borders Police spokesman said: "I can confirm that a 64-year-old man has been arrested and will be appearing at Edinburgh Sheriff Court tomorrow in connection with drug offences."

Mr Paton guided the Bay City Rollers - one of Scotland's most successful bands - through their heyday in the 1970s as they sold 70 million records, attracting an enormous worldwide following.

Critics dubbed the phenomenon "Roller-mania" as screaming fans, mostly teenage girls, copied the group's trademark tartan-fringed shirts and trousers and clumpy shoes.

The band, featuring Stuart Wood, Eric Faulkner, Les McKeown and brothers Derek and Alan Longmuir, were best known for hits including Shang-A-Lang, Bye Bye Baby and Give a Little Love.

But as the 70s neared their end the band's popularity waned, and Mr Paton was sacked in 1979 after 11 years.

'Historic allegations'

He went on to become a property developer in his native Edinburgh.

Stars in their Eyes presenter Matthew Kelly was arrested on Wednesday and bailed on Thursday afternoon.

The 52-year-old, from Chiswick, west London, was arrested by Surrey Police at a theatre in Birmingham where he has been starring in the pantomime Peter Pan.

He was questioned by officers in Guildford, Surrey, in connection with "historic allegations" of sexual abuse against boys under 16.

The 52-year-old father-of-two will answer bail at Guildford station on 12 March, a police spokesman said.
