Two die in harbour tragedy
Coastguards
Coastguard officers took part in the rescue
A car which plunged into a harbour in Fife, killing its elderly occupants, is being examined by investigators.

Striking firefighters left picket lines at Kirkcaldy and Burntisland to help the rescue effort at Pettycur Bay in Kingorn about 1900 GMT on Tuesday.

Gerald Patey, 87, and his wife Anne, 84, were trapped inside, unable to break free.

They were brought to the surface and taken to the Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy.

The vehicle was recovered from water during the night.

Christine Black
Christine Black: "Community feeling"

Police and Coastguard officers have begun an investigation.

Mr and Mrs Patey's grandson, Euan Duncan, is a firefighter in Edinburgh and praised the efforts of his colleagues in Fife.

Meanwhile, three military firefighting vehicles battled to save a nursery school in Glasgow.

Two military Green Goddesses and a Red Goddess were called to the fire at the empty building, in the Kinning Park area of the city.

It was well ablaze as crews of military personnel doused it with hoses at its front and rear.

'Valuable asset'

The fire was brought under control but the roof of the Scotland Street Nursery building was completely destroyed and will have to be pulled down.

Nursery headteacher Christine Black said it was a major blow and a replacement building for the children will have to be found.

She said: "We have a very good, strong partnership with parents and children - there is a strong community feeling.

"We are a valuable asset in the community and would be very sorry to see that go."

A spokeswoman for Glasgow City Council said 85 pupils were on the roll at the nursery.
