The designer of the rare Aston Martin car which will feature in the next James Bond film is to take centre stage with his creation - at a church fete in Dumfries.

Ian Callum's mother, Sheila, asked him to bring the �150,000 V12 Vanquish to the event on Saturday at St George's Church, where she is a member of the congregation.

And even though he was due to be in California, it was an offer he could not refuse.

"I think it is always best to do what mum says," he told BBC Scotland.

Pierce Brosnan stars in Die Another Day

"Anyway, there is beautiful sunshine here, beautiful countryside and a beautiful car to drive.

"I think California can wait."

The 450 horse power car, which has a top speed of 195 miles per hour, is to be driven by Pierce Brosnan in the new 007 movie Die Another Day.

Bond will be back behind the wheel of an Aston Martin after driving a BMW in his last three films.

Mr Callum, from Dumfries, said: "When I heard Bond was driving Astons again I was delighted.

"When you think about it Bond should drive an Aston - especially this one.

"It is extremely powerful and even so I say so myself it is quite beautiful - and there are only 400 in the world so far."

He admitted that he would feel every dent inflicted on the car during the film.

But he would not lift the lid on the modifications planned for the car.

Bond's original DB5 included an ejector seat, smoke screen tanks, oil slicks, bullet-proof shield and bullet-proof glass.

"I think you will find that Bond has quite a few gadgets in this car, quite a few new tools and toys," said Mr Callum.

"But it is all top secret so far."
