Court told of second baby death
High Court Edinburgh
The court heard how Dylan died in March 1996
A woman has told a court of the last time she saw her baby before it was allegedly suffocated by his father.

Maureen Lockerbie, 24, collapsed in tears in the witness box as she told a court that six-month-old Dylan smiled at her as she went to work.

Miss Lockerbie's partner, Ian Metcalfe, 34, has gone on trial at the High Court in Edinburgh accused of murdering Dylan and another son, Kyle, by a different woman.

Iain Metcalfe
Ian Metcalfe has denied the allegations
Metcalfe, who lives with Miss Lockerbie in Locharbriggs, Dumfries, has denied attempting to murder and murdering Dylan, as well as the attempted murder and murder of Kyle.

He has also denied twice attempting to murder a third child, who cannot be named for legal reasons.

Prosecuting advocate-depute Edward Targowski QC asked Miss Lockerbie about visits the couple received from a social worker after Dylan was treated in hospital for an injury.

Social services had become concerned for Dylan's welfare and recommended that Metcalfe should receive a psychiatric assessment.

The prosecutor asked: "Do you recall the social worker saying that if you agreed to work voluntarily with social services and Ian agreed to see psychological services the matter wouldn't be referred to the children's panel?"

Miss Lockerbie replied that she did not recall this.

Driven to work

However, she did remember seeing scratch marks on their son's thumb shortly before his death on 13 March, 1996.

She saw her son alive for the last time on the morning of 12 March.

The accused, who had been made redundant, drove her to work that morning at 0900 BST.

Miss Lockerbie, a receptionist, said Dylan was sitting in the back of the car in a baby chair.

She said: "I remember he was sitting a bit lop-sided. I reminded Ian to get some milk for his feed on the way home."

When the prosecutor asked her about the moment she said goodbye she said: "Dylan was fine," before she collapsed.

Metcalfe allegedly suffocated the child later that day.

The trial continues.
