Staff at a nursery have spoken of their shock after the death of a five-year-old pupil who drowned while on holiday in Majorca.

Jordan Hamill, from Bishopbriggs, near Glasgow, died in the resort of Porto Colom on the Spanish holiday island.

He was found face down in a swimming pool at the hotel where he had been on a two-week holiday with his grandmother.

Jordan attended Auchinairn nursery and a spokeswoman for East Dunbartonshire Council said staff had been stunned by the news.

She said: "Jordan was a popular and well-liked pupil at Auchinairn Nursery and was due to go up to the primary school there in August.

"Staff at the nursery are shocked and upset at the tragic news.

"They have all described Jordan as a joy to teach. They would like to pass on their sympathies to the family."

Jordan's grandmother, whose name has not been released, reportedly became ill when the boy's body was found and was taken to a nearby hospital.

Two guests at the Hotel Cecilia were understood to have pulled the child from the water.

Consular assistance

Police have launched an investigation into the incident.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said consular assistance was being provided to the boy's parents, who were in Glasgow at the time of the tragedy.

She said: "We understand there will be an investigation by police on the island to confirm the cause of death."

Safety inspectors were due to visit the hotel pool to examine the site.
