Unique bagpipes from north Africa are to be included in an exhibition tracing the origin of day-to-day objects.

The rare Moroccan pipes, which date from the early 20th century, will go on display at the Royal Museum in Edinburgh later this summer.

The exhibition, entitled Roots - Exotic Origins of Everyday Things - explores the impact of the developing world on western culture.

There will be an emphasis on items which have become so commonplace that their origins have almost been forgotten.

As well as the Moroccan bagpipes, other objects will include a sealskin coat, which was the model for the modern-day Parka jacket.

An Indian falconry set and a Chinese timepiece, which was the forerunner of the modern watch, will also be included.

The exhibition will run from 3 August to 3 November.
