| Friday, 21 December, 2001, 07:30 GMT New fears over teachers' pay The EIS wants more money to implement McCrone Scotland's largest teaching union is calling for sufficient funding to be made available to implement the full scope of an agreement on pay and conditions. The Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS) fears that commitment to the McCrone agreement is wavering less than one year after a deal was struck. The backbone of the agreement delivered a 21.5% pay rise to teachers and prescribed a new career structure and revised working conditions. An 800m package to pay for the improvements was formally agreed in January at a meeting of the McCrone Implementation Group which includes teaching unions, the Scottish Executive and council employers.
Highland Council warned that the settlement would hit rural areas harder as staffing costs were much higher in schools outwith urban areas. These doubts and other concerns are now a major source of worry for the EIS. The teaching union said that although the first part of the agreed pay rise has already been put in place, full implementation of McCrone was still a long way off. It is also warning that some trainee teachers face difficulty in finding a school placement despite assurances in the agreement that every "probationer" will get one year's training. They fear in some cases, temporary teachers will be dropped in order to make way for trainees. The Scottish Executive said it would fund full implementation of the agreement and that the Scottish Negotiating Committee for Teachers is making progress to resolve all areas of concern. |
