Gordon Brown has announced there will be an independent inquiry into the Iraq war, which will be held in private.

Conservative leader David Cameron said there was a danger the inquiry would look "fixed" as it would not report until after the next election, allowing the government to avoid facing any "inconvenient conclusions".

He called on the prime minister to announce an interim report early next year.
