Under-fire Speaker to step down

The Conservative backbencher Douglas Carswell has told the BBC that he put forward the motion of no confidence in Michael Martin because he believes that the reputation of the House of Commons has "never been lower".

Speaker Michael Martin has been criticised over his handling of the furore over MPs' expenses.

A motion of no confidence in him has been backed by 23 MPs.
