Derry City loses two key sponsors

Derry City FC will ask for donations to make up the funding shortfall

Derry City Football Club has lost two of its main sponsors, with the resulting loss of revenue likely to run into tens of thousands of pounds.

One of the sponsors is Cookstown-based company, Meteor Electrical, which has ceased trading with the loss of 70 jobs.

The club will try to raise £50,000 by asking 50 companies and individuals to donate £1,000 each.

"Both companies will be badly missed," said Derry chairman Pat McDaid.

"Obviously this is not something that we would like to have happened and Meteor Electrical, in particular, have invested heavily in Derry City and helped us to go full-time.

"Both firms have played a major part in the success we enjoyed in recent seasons."

Mr McDaid said the club had already received pledges from 17 potential investors.
