Stadium application 'ineligible'

Brandywell
Derry City say the current Brandywell is not fit for purpose

Brandywell Properties have had their funding application to redevelop Derry City's stadium turned down by the Department of Sport in the Republic.

The application was refused because the club is located outside the state and is therefore deemed "ineligible".

The club said they still plan to go ahead with the project and "remain hopeful of a successful conclusion".

The Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure in NI said it has never received a funding application.

Sinn Fein MLA Raymond McCartney, who sits on the DCAL committee, said the department can assist Brandywell Properties in seeking a funding package.

"The department currently have no stream for this kind of funding, but at a previous meeting we have said if the business plan stacks up then we will be able to help."

In a statement Derry City Football Club chairman Pat McDaid said they were confident about maintaining pressure on the relevant bodies to reach their goal.

"We would like to reassure our supporters, the general public and in particular the residents of the Brandywell area that we continue to pursue the redevelopment of the Brandywell stadium in a positive manner."
