Marie Collins was abused by a priest when she was a young girl |
A victim of clerical abuse has said she was left disappointed after a meeting with Catholic Primate Cardinal Brady. Campaigner Marie Collins met with the Cardinal on Tuesday at his home in Armagh. The meetings followed revelations that Sean Brady was present when children signed vows of silence over allegations against a paedophile priest. The priest in question was Father Brendan Smyth who went on to abuse many more children over the following years. The Northern Ireland-born cleric was eventually convicted of dozens of offences against children over a 40-year period. Last month, the head of Ireland's Catholic Church apologised for his role in mishandling the case of serial child abuser, Father Brendan Smyth. He told Mass goers he would take a period of time to reflect on his future. Marie Collins, who was sexually abused by a priest when she was a young girl in hospital, said Cardinal Brady should step down. "I did say that to him, to his face, because, I felt it's not something you say outside and then don't say to the man himself." Cardinal Brady also met with representatives from the Survivors of Child Abuse group. Speaking after their meeting, John Kelly said they told the cardinal that they considered him to be "a lame duck leader".
