Translink has blamed fare rises on increased fuel costs |
Fares on buses and trains in Northern Ireland are to rise by up to 9% from later this month, Translink has said. From 27 March, fares on the Metro service will increase by an average of 7%, while Ulsterbus and NI Railways fares will see an increase of about 9%.
Translink's Ciaran Rogan said the increasing cost of fuel was to blame for the price rise.
"We have done what we can to minimise rises in fares, but everyone is aware of the rising cost of fuel," he said.
"This was acknowledged by the Consumer Council. Nevertheless, with our net fuel costs increasing by over 70% in two years it is now inevitable that this now impacts on Northern Ireland's bus and rail services."
Eddie Lynch, head of consumer affairs at the council, said people should make the most out of multi-journey travel cards to save money.
"This is unwelcome news for passengers and means that extra money has to be found from already overstretched pockets," he said.
"The Consumer Council is particularly concerned for rural bus and train passengers who are facing the highest increases with this announcement and we are currently in discussions with Translink on this important issue."
