Bus and rail fares are set to increase next March

The transport company blamed its decision on higher fuel costs.

Alan Walker of the Consumer Council said the move was unwelcome but predictable, given the circumstances.

"At a time when Translink is improving punctuality and reliability, it is important future price increases do not dent passenger confidence," he said.

Mr Walker said he was pleased that "until now Translink has been able to shield passengers by buying fuel in advance at lower prices".

He praised the company for publicising the increase in advance.

"This will give us time to see what can be done to ensure that other costs are kept under control to minimise increases in fares next year," he said.
