Drink-driving is to be targeted in the crackdown |
More than 550 motorists are to appear in court following a winter crackdown on drink-driving, police have revealed. Between 22 November and 2 January, more than 3,700 drivers in Northern Ireland were screened for alcohol by police.
Acting Chief Inspector Rosie Leech said there would be "no let up in our determination to catch drink-drivers and bring them before the courts".
"The fact that we detected 23 more drink-drivers during this winter's campaign reflects that determination."
Police said out of 552 drivers detected, 495 of these were men.
The detections included motorists who were unfit to drive and those who were unable or refused to give a sample.
Twenty-nine drivers were three times the legal limit, while two were four times the limit, according to police.
Forty-five people were detected between 6am and 11am in what police said were cases "known as the morning afters".
The crackdown was backed by an advertising campaign which carried the message that a single alcoholic drink can impair a driver's judgement.
