Alcohol plays major role in date rape
Police and bar owners have united to raise awareness about date rape in Northern Ireland.

Forty-one people were the victims of date rape in Northern Ireland in 2001, according to new statistics.

But contrary to popular belief, alcohol, not rohypnol, is the main date rate drug.

A campaign, launched on Tuesday, aims to raise awareness about the problem of drink-assisted sexual assaults.

Detective Superintendent Andrew Bailey said: "It is vital that men and women know of the risks of alcohol and other drugs that may be used to facilitate a sexual assault.

"But we are asking them to consider the messages on the beer mats and be aware of the protective measures that can be taken.

"The chances of someone becoming a victim of a drug assisted sexual assault are slim, but they will be even smaller if people follow the four simple steps on the beer mat."

Beers mats warning of the dangers are being distributed across Northern Ireland.

The advice printed on them is:

  • Don't leave your drink unattended
  • Don't accept drink from people you don't trust
  • If it tastes or smells funny, don't trust it
  • Remember, alcohol is the main date rape drug
The police also want to ensure that victims of sexual assaults report the crime. They have counsellors to offer advice and support.
