Spiked drinks warning follows assaults
Rohypnol
Rohypnol has been used to spike drinks
An awareness campaign is being launched in Londonderry to warn young people of the dangers of spiked drinks.

Over the past year, 10% of cases reported in Northern Ireland have involved sexual assaults.

The manager of the Nucleus drop-in centre in the city said more than 200 young people had reported having their drink spiked.

There are people who spike for sinister reasons

Colleen Heaney
Centre manager

"We think people spike drinks for a variety of reasons, said Colleen Heaney.

"We feel that some people do it as a joke and it is a joke that goes wrong and then maybe they can't come forward and deal with that.

"There are people who spike for sinister reasons, who stand back and watch someone getting very very drunk and end up helpless.

"And then there are those that possibly spike in order to perpetrate a sexual assault."
