They were Shane Delargy, 17, of Skerrydhu, Newtowncrommelin near Ballymena, and Aidan McIlhatton of Lisnamary Park, Martinstown, aged 14.

The accident happened when the motorcycle they were on was involved in a collision with a car on the Glenravel Road in the village at about 2100 GMT on Friday.

The driver of the car suffered shock, but was otherwise uninjured.

Local priest Father George O'Hanlon said the teenagers' families were deeply shocked.

"Members of the families have gathered - sons and daughters have come together," he said.

"That is a tremendous help at a time like this.

"They are bearing up well at the moment as they gather together.

"The shock has been so much and so devastating that the outcome of it all has not penetrated them yet."

Community

SDLP councillor Margaret Gribben said the deaths had left the village stunned.

"It is very tragic. In a small community like this, when one family is affected, the whole glen is affected," she said.

"You can feel the sadness and the sorrow right across the glen. It is that sort of a community."

So far this year, 11 people have been killed in traffic accidents.

In the same period last year, one person died.
